"Six Pak" Wins Silver in World 3v3 Soccer Tourney For the second year in a row, six East Tennessee soccer stars -- Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater High), Martha Hall (IMG Soccer Academy), Chelsea Hunt(Bearden High), Josie Rix (Girls Preparatory School, Chattanooga),Gretchen Sutch (Knoxville Catholic High), and Casey Ulrich (Farragut High) - won the silver medal in the "Kick-It 3v3 World Championships," held January 13-14 at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida.
The girls competed in the top U-17 Competitive Division under the team name "Six Pak" (referring to abdominal muscles, not beverages).
In a rematch of last year's championship game, Six Pak lost 5-4 to the Raptors from Pittsburgh, Pa.- an improvement over last year's 9-3 score.
3v3 soccer has long been popular in other countries and is gaining popularity in the US. With only three players on the field at one time, it is a game of continuous action, emphasizing foot skills, speed, endurance and rapid decision-making. The game is played on a smaller field (30x40 yards), with smaller goals and no goalkeepers.
In pool play Six Pak defeated "Trouble Brewing" from Lawrenceburg, Indiana, "Melck Duds" from Versailles, Kentucky, and "Diamonds" from Yardley, Pennsylvania.
In the semifinal, the Pakkers edged "Pure Business" from Fort Collins, Colorado, 6-5 in overtime to set up the title-game rematch against their Iron City rivals, the Raptors, who were also undefeated.
Five of the Six Pak girls play for the 90 Impact Nike I competitive soccer team, based in Knoxville. Martha Hall played for the 90 Impact and Knoxville Catholic High before transferring to the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida. | Posted on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 (Archive on Monday, January 01, 0001) Posted by JillBuckley25 Contributed by
