Denton Commits to Maryville College MARYVILLE Tenn.- Rachel Denton has committed to continue her education, and soccer career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.
The daughter of Randy and Laurie Denton from Kingston, TN, Rachel was a standout in midfield for the Warriors under Head Coach Nathan Pifer.
In her time as a Warrior Denton was a four-time All-District, and two-time All-Region selection. Her senior season she lead her team to their first ever state title, and individually was named to both the Tennessee Coaches, and Sports Writers All-State teams.
As an NCAA Division III institution, Maryville College does not award scholarships based on athletic performance; however, for her proven academic ability and accomplishments, the Christian Academy of Knoxville graduate has been awarded the Maryville College Dean’s scholarship.
Pepe Fernandez, head coach of the Maryville College women’s soccer team, said, “Rachel is a quick player with a great feel for the game, and she will be a nice addition to our squad. We are excited about having Rachel in the program for the next four years.” This fall, Denton will join a team that finished the 2006 season with a 16-5-0 record winning the regular season, and conference tournament titles for the fifth consecutive year. They finished the season ranked 4th in the South Region, and received their third successive bid, and fourth in six years to the NCAA National Tournament advancing to the 2nd round. Seven players made the All-Conference team last year, and the Lady Scot’s return 22 players from last year’s squad including Great South Athletic Conference Player of the year, and 1st team All-South selection Sarah Harmon (Peachtree City, GA).
Fernandez has led the men and women’s soccer programs at Maryville College since 1989. The coach’s win-loss record for the Lady Scot’s is 188-88-14. (Ranked 23rd all-time in career wins)
