90 Impact Makes the Final at Potomac Memorial

Heading north to Germantown, Maryland, for the presigious Potomac Memorial Tournament, the 90 Impact Nike I competitive soccer team did not have a goalkeeper for the weekend.

That is, until Patience Leonard from Greeneville High School donned the keeper gloves and led the U17 girls' team to the championship game against the Rush Nike team from Virginia Beach, Va.

The 90 Impact Nike I, coached by Antonio Almeida, beat the Potomac Blaze 2-1, tied the Virginia Rush 1-1, routed the 90 White Plains (N.Y.) Elite 6-0, and scored a 4-1 semifinal victory over the Capital United Blue Thunder from Albany, N.Y., to set up the championship-game rematch with the Virginia Rush Nike.

In both games against the Virginia Rush, Leonard played every bit as tough and smart as Rush goalkeeper Kristin Carden, who has verbally commited to play for ACC soccer power Virginia Tech in 2008.

Thanks to clutch saves by Leonard, the title game was a tense 0-0 deadlock through 80 minutes of regulation play and two overtimes. The Rush prevailed in a penalty kick shootout.

June 9th through the 11th, the 90 Impact Nike I heads to another Germantown, this one in Tennessee, for the TSSA State Championship tournament.

The 90 Impact Nike I is made up of 22 girls from high schools all over East Tennessee.

They are Maggie Alexander, Trenna Howell and Thanh Lay from Oak Ridge High; Taylor Buquo from Baylor; Olivia Clark from West High; Claire Duncan, Patience Leonard and Michelle Meade from Greeneville High; Morgan Gruenenfelder from Sweetwater High; Britney Reinhardt from Maryville High; Sara Rochester and Chelsea Hunt from Bearden High; Lindsay Matijevich from Jefferson County High; Josie Rix from GPS; Gretchen Sutch and Rachel Bonfini from Knox Catholic; and Kaila Beasley, Megan Buzzeo, Shannon Schell, Morgan Plum and Casey Ulrich from Farragut High.
